Another Story Idea, a Not So Short Story, pt. 1

That title is a generic, filler title until I come up with something more appropriate(feel free to suggest titles in the comments). This is a longer story than I generally post here and will be presented in parts. I’m thinking the posts will be twice a week until the end (don’t worry, it’s not *that* long). So, I hope you all enjoy it.

He stands behind this familiar door. He takes a moment as he fumbles for the keys in his pocket.

He sighs as he manages to retrieve them.

“I can’t believe I’m back here.”, he thinks, “I know I need to do this…”

He puts his key in the door.

He rests his head against the door. He feels the weight and warmth of the wood as he takes a moment to think.

“I’ve been putting this off for a couple of months. I don’t want to lose her…”, he continues, “I also don’t want to lose him.”

He sighs again, feeling the weight of the discussion that he knows will take place.

He turns the key slowly. He finally hears the click of the lock opening.

“It’s now or never.”, he thinks as his hand feels the cold metal of the door knob in it.

He turns the knob and opens the door.

Her apartment looks the same as it had 2 months ago. It looks immaculate. Everything was in the same place as it had been when he left her 2 months ago. It was a type of cleanliness that felt more lived in than his boyfriend’s.

As the word boyfriend entered his mind, he couldn’t help but grin a little. He had always fantasized about the day he could call him boyfriend.

As he looks around the dining room, he notices that it really does look the same. He thought that she would have neatly packed up his stuff and leave them somewhere for him to retrieve. He sees all the things that they had bought together. He sighs wistfully as he could feel the strength and weight of the wood of the chair he was holding on to.

“I’m home.”, he says, half-expecting her to not be here.

She appears, slowly, meekly from inside a room further down the hall.

Her face shows the confusion running through her head. She wants to run to him, throw her arms around him and have him tell her that everything’s alright. That these last two months were some horrible nightmare. She also thinks that she is happy to see him. Happy to see him looking healthy and to see that he’s been taken care of.

“Welcome home.”, she replies a little soft and unsure.

He nods as he let go of the chair. He slowly approaches her. She looks as beautiful as she did 2 months ago, if not a little thinner. The stress of what they were going through could be the only thing that’s causing it… at least that’s what he would guess.

He stands in front of her, not quite sure what he should do. He wants to hold her, but he’s not sure he can give her what she truly desires. Never before has his contentment been tinged with so much uncertainty. Not even when he was in that relationship in high school. It makes his heart ache just a little think about the enormity of all of this.

Finally, he reaches a hand out to gently caress her arm. As he felt her small form in his hands, he couldn’t help himself. He wraps her in his arms, holding her tightly.

“W-why are you here?”, she asks, confused about the situation.

He closes his eyes for a moment. He takes a deep breath.

“We need to have a serious talk.”, he says.
