A Quickie for the Holidays and a Post for the Apocalypse

December 21, 2012 | Filed under: Anecdotes, Export and tagged with: Amazon, apocalypse, arm-chair philosophy, Assassin's Creed 3, Christmas, end of the world, holiday retail, holidays, internet shopping, online shopping, retail, retail hell, Yule

Since this might the last post before the big game on Tuesday (not sure if I’m going to want to post on Monday), I figured I’d give ya a little quickie.

I will say that I’m glad for internet shopping. It made it easy for me to avoid almost all overly crowded stores with their apathetic sales staff and overly aggro customers. Customers so angry that they’re willing to yell at everyone, including the poor sales people. Though, I will state, after many years of working retail for the Xmas season I understand why the sales staff is apathetic. There is so many times that you can be yelled at because the Playboy shirt that someone’s daughter wanted or that DVD is out of stock.

In many ways, I feel genuinely bad for the staff. After all, there’s only so much berating that someone can take. I’ve been there. I’ve been personally blamed because something was out of stock.

And this is why I am singing the praises of buying everything online this year. Oh, thank you Amazon for being a one-stop shopping site. You have saved me from a barrage of Xmas carols (that I also can’t tolerate anymore after spending years in retail) and people who lose all sight of rational thought when they can’t buy a copy of Assassin’s Creed 3 and then take it out on the person who’s making just above minimum wage for this abuse.

And to think, today was supposed to be the end of the world. And yet, here we are. I sit here with a cup of tea and two snoozing dogs. If this is the end of the world… I think I can deal with it.

If there’s one thing that I am glad about it’s that I won’t hear anything about 12/21/2012 ever again. I realize that the definition of end of the world varies from person to person. I never pictured the “end of the world” to be some biblical event like stated in Revelations or some cataclysmic event. I pictured it being a shift. And perhaps that’s just it. Things are changing. The world is shifting into another version of itself.

Of course, this is all arm-chair philosophy. So, I’ll end this bit of waxing philosophical.

I hope y’all have a great whatever you happen to celebrate. For me, the next big celebration (after Halloween) is New Year’s. So, if I don’t post before Tuesday, I hope you all have a wonderful Yule/Solstice and a great Xmas.
