Musical Trip

November 10, 2011 | Filed under: Anecdotes

There’s going to be a bit of a delay in posting for Wednesday. I’m finally under way on my trip and no longer in the last minute rush to figure out what I should remember/bring/what have you. I’m writing this as virtually everyone naps on the plane.

I don’t know about most people, but I have problems with sleeping upright. I just can’t do it. It’s not comfortable for me at all. I’m sure that at least one other person who’ll read this feels that way. So, while I’m no this red-eye flight, I find myself needing to find things to amuse myself while everyone else sleeps.

I tired watching something, but I think my brain’s just too tired right now. Or it could be that my body isn’t comfortable enough to allow me to focus (coincidental, I know as writing also requires a certain degree of concentration as well).

So, instead I opened up a DJ program on my computer and am now being my own personal DJ.

I know, how exciting is that on an airplane?

Well, when you’re a captive audience on the 3.5 hour flight with a movie that you don’t really care about… it’s wonderful. It also allows me a chance to practice DJing. Something I don’t get a chance to do very often.

Granted, it’s not my primary passion. The ability to put pretty little words against a background that keeps people compelled to read, that’s what I love. However, music is a very important part of my life. I was raised with music. I come from a family of musicians. It’s something that’s in my blood. It’s important to me and I can’t imagine what my life would be without it.

It also helps me write. I’m not the type of person who works well with nothing in the background. I need music. Too a certain degree music influences my screenwriting. It’s like I intrinsically write with a soundtrack in mind. Which is a good thing. After the Screenwriters strike in 2008 writers and especially spec writers need to do more packaging than they needed to do in the past. Of course, building in a soundtrack was already a bonus as it would give the producer less they would have to think of as it was already provided for them.

But I digress.

Music is important. It’s been important in my life for as long as I can remember. My mom used to play it all the time. When I went to day care I would listen to New Wave. There was always music at my grandparents’ house…

Wow, I just realized that this is getting a little rambling…

Well, lack of sleep will do that to you.

Needless to say, if I didn’t have my music with me, this trip would be a lot longer. It’s helping me as we speak. I may or may not post later today. I’ll have to see how awake I am once I arrive in Philadelphia.

Until then…
